SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
“Spiritual Direction is about awakening the essence of our soul as human beings. Spiritual Direction helps us love ourselves and who we are with the transformational energy of love as we journey on the path of integration and wholeness of being in God.”
- Sister Ann Walters, OP
Everyone has a spirit. But what is spirit? In his book, Spirituality and the Awakening Self, David Benner says, “Spirit is dynamic, energizing, vitalizing, and enriching. Like fire and wind, spirit ignites, moves, and animates us. It gives us the energy to live life to the full. But it also always calls us beyond our self, orienting us toward a self-transcendent reference point … Spirit points us toward our source and our destiny, toward the place within we most belong. It is expansive, always questing, always driven by deep longings that point us toward Absolute Spirit.”
The core of spirituality is, most essentially, about being open to this Absolute Spirit.

Each of us has the potential to live in openness to the movement of the spirit within us. The invitation is for everyone to wake up and allow ourselves to unfold into the fullness of the spirit within that leads us home to our true self.

Sounds exciting and exhilarating, and terrifying and exhausting at the same time. It is a quest, and any quester would benefit greatly from a spiritual companion (also known as a director). Not someone who tells you what to do or when, but someone who walks alongside you, listens carefully to you, and cares for you with compassion and tenderness. A spiritual director/companion listens deeply for truth, shares honestly what was heard, and holds up a mirror to encourage discernment and deeper connection with oneself, and with unconditional love.
